Horses For Sale / Black Storm West Auction
« on: 9 hours ago »
Some post-summer purging, as I've collected too many horses. Mix of weanlings, yearlings, racehorses of all ages, and broodmares that come in foal. A few reserves, but none over 25k and most are 5k or 10k. No purchasing limits.

Auction begins tomorrow.

General/Questions / Re: Racing Frequency

I also try to get at least 2 weeks of training under a horse before entering, but some horses just work differently. I'm mostly thinking of Cricket Hill's Palermo who managed to rattle off wins with like 1 week breaks between them. I can safely say none of mine have managed such a trick, though! I definitely race at A/A energy, 2 weeks of races, and I try and send horses home every 3-4 months for at least 2 months (Shanthi has said that 1 month at the farm is more than enough). Right after a race, I don't work them for about 3-4 weeks as a sort of rest/down period to recover E/F. Stakes runners I might board for 7-11 days after a race as a quicker energy boost, but just not working them and saving myself the boarding $$ seems to work well, too.

I am constantly tweaking how I handle my horses, but 2 weeks training before a race, A/A for energy/fitness, and sending home every 3-4 months is fairly standard for me.

That should not detract from his achievements. For a horse to be so close to Stud-Qualification after only 9 races is remarkable.

Seriously. There's really no worry whether he'll get those 2 measly SP's. He has several years ahead of him.

Unlike a certain 6yo of mine in the barn who is still 1 SW short. At least it's not a G1 he needs!

General/Questions / Strike it Rich Retired
« on: September 22, 2018, 02:08:36 pm »
We were saddened to discover the retirement of Strike this morning, having just purchased him in the Mixed Auction a few months ago, but that's the risk you take with such an older horse (and probably why no one else bid, lol). We did manage to squeeze in 11 mares to him before the season ended, so looking forward to those foals. Unfortunately I will need to rethink breeding plans for a dozen or so mares.

Although we only had him for about 3 months, Strike It Rich was active in FF for 16 years, so it feels only right to give him a proper send-off. Bred by Stillwater Farms, he won $2.7 million on the track and won 16 stakes races. At stud, he is currently silver with bronze as damsire. He has produced 8 MSW's and 4 millionaires. Some of his best foals include NCh. Billionaire, GCh. Boundless Train, GCh. Rich Belle, and MG1W/this year's G1 Dubai World Cup winner Ch. Strike It Lucky. He also has a 2yo SW in Ch. Tee En Tee.

Decent day, but most pleased about the fact that Palermo is now stud-qualified. :-)

Congratulations! That's crazy he's only 2. I don't think any of my horses would survive his race schedule. One day I'd like a freak of my own, haha.

Solid day from our racing crew.

Famous Races/Horses / Re: Breeder's Cup Festival (Nov. 2-3)
« on: September 20, 2018, 09:36:18 pm »
I just noticed that there are no SC Breeder's Cup races in real life, but there is a Juvenile Turf Sprint which isn't in the game.

There actually is a Breeders' Cup Steeplechase (called the G1 Breeders' Cup Grand National), but it's always at Far Hills in New Jersey and I THINK it goes off a few weeks before the actual BC. So it's sort of an unofficial BC race. I'm fine with not having all the RL BC races (I feel there's too many nowadays. Make it harder again! And not a marathon to watch 2 days of races). That being said, I do miss the RL BC Marathon and would totally welcome it in FF, haha.

Can I please have a June spot to Space Chips for Little Black Dress?

Sending out another filly this year in the JCGC with Flaming Key. She won the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks last out so distance shouldn't be a problem. This will be her final prep before the Breeders' Cup (if all goes well).

I usually have a mass lineup for the Juvenile races, but not this year. Tentatively I have about 10 aimed for the BC with most in SC races. Definitely planning for Beratis to run in the BC SC Endurance, Flaming Key in the BC Distaff, Chortle in the BC Mile, Marchioness in the BC Filly/Mare Turf, and Foolish Whispers in the BC Juvenile Turf Fillies. Others had a not-so-great last outing so I'm on the fence and just watching the Qualifier list for now.

Sorry to see him go. He got to 6 SW, etc as a 3YO but I just couldn't get him to get the last SW he needed to become Stud-Qualified. Finally decided to sell him in the hopes that he might have an uptake in form in new surroundings. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and, as he is now 8YO and probably well past his prime, I can understand why he would be retired.

We have another horse in a similar position, NCh. Gaudy Night, who is a year younger but also only needs one more SW. Unlike Bracton, Gaudy Night has shown a little recent form this year, including winning the G1 Grand National for the second time, so we are still hopeful for him.

Hopefully Gaudy Night makes it! Bracton has not earned a dime or even hit the board in years so I felt it was finally time to throw in the towel. I am still hopeful for Clowning Around though, who just needs a SW of any grade. At least he's 6 and has hit the board this year (albeit in an allowance). Hoping a very long rest until the Breeders' Series this winter will be enough.
