How'd You Do? 2021
« on: December 04, 2017, 09:31:07 am »
I actually forgot about it yesterday morning, but managed to get a few of my first picks. Last year I bought only Like Whatever, and I still keep him. He had a good 2yo year, won once and was many times in the money, although not stakes level. He definitely earned his purchase price.

This year's yearlings:

Apophis is a 15.1h bay yearling filly by ICh. City Upon a Hill, out of Ch. As You See (WCh. As You Wish). Born on January 1st, she should be soon ready to start her training. She has a wonderful pedigree, with dam allowance level on dirt and turf and stakes level steeplechaser. 4x5 inbred to Secretariat via dam. She is the second foal from her freshman sire. Named after a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a probability of up to 2.7% that it would hit Earth on April 13, 2029. Not sure if it's a feminine name, but I really wanted to use this one and I keep naming foals alphabetically...
Purchase price: $31,000

Gliese is a 15.2h chestnut filly by ICh. Prince Of Wonder, out of Ch. LittleBittieSecret. Dam was stakes level as a 3yo and she also had a good 2yo career. I had one homebred colt by Prince Of Wonder, which is now retired, and I decided to give this sire another chance... Gliese is a name of several red dwarfs and one asteroid, which are named after Wilhelm Gliese, a German astronomer. He specialized in the study and cataloging of nearby stars.
Purchase price: $1,000

I'm Game is a 15.1h dark bay colt by ICh. Devil His Due, out of Ch. First Dance (Whirlaway). Dam was a turf monster as a 3yo, won Gr. 1 Arlington Million and set a speed record winning Ungr. Boo La Boo Stakes by 16 lengths. She is now silver ranked. The colt has already reached his estimated height.
Purchase price: $8,500

Weanling:

Zest For Blue is a 11.1h blood bay colt by Blue Ensign, out of platinum ranked Slew Copy. Both her millionaire sons were turf specialists and Blue Ensign was a Grade 1 steeplechaser, so this colt should have some talent for jumps (and turf). He is only my second horse out of a platinum ranked mare; the first one I got just recently as my Color War award.
Purchase price:  $24,500

Now let's practice the zen of not looking back to buy more potential money eaters... ;)

Bought waaaaaay too many, especially of the colt variety. Oh well. ;) Missed out on a few top choice horses but took home plenty of others. Purchased 10 for $22,000.

Azurite, 2020 black filly (NCh. Lucky Streak x Favorite Gem). Half to MSW Ch. Moving Blackwards. Bought for 1k.

Civil Wars, 2020 chestnut colt (ICh. Dark Continent x Embassy, by NCh. Diplomat). Half to 2 winners from 3 runners including SP American Jazz. From the same family as MSW Ch. American Idol and SP Ch. Thirteenth Warrior. Bought for 1k.

Foxglove, 2021 bay colt (NCh. Eighteen Karat x Vixen, by Gallant Fox). Half to 3 winners including a SP. From the same family as our stallion, French Ruby, and . Gallant Fox is a silver-ranked broodmare sire. Bought for 1k.

Otter Woods, 2021 dark bay colt (Invasor x Solid Timber). By retired silver-ranked Invasor, his only started half-sib is MSW Ch. Express Jarrah. Bought for 1k.

Pocketfullofembers, 2020 dark gray filly (NCh. Highland Burning x Pocketfullofposies, by Whirlaway). I'm really liking Highland Burning and having Whirlaway as a broodmare sire (gold-ranked) is an added bonus. She is half to 100% winners including SP Elfin Thrill. A top choice, we picked her up for just 1k.

Smiling Addiction, 2021 dark bay colt (ICh. Dark Continent x Awardwinningsmile). Only started half-sibling is a stakes winner. Bought for 1k.

Strike the Colors, 2021 black colt (WCh. Strike it Rich x Paint Me Quick). By gold-ranked Strike It Rich out of silver-ranked Paint Me Quick, half to GCh. Theft. Bought for 1k.

Tosini, 2020 liver chestnut colt (GCh. Simply Heroic x Ch. Titian). Dam is silver-ranked and a SW/MSP. He is half to SW ShootForTheStars and 3 other winners. Bought for 1k.

While I Worry, 2020 bay colt (ICh. Devil His Due x Ch. While I Skip, by Worth My While). I own his dam and wanted to help promote her broodmare career. Same Sire/Broodmare Sire as Devil It Is, another homebred now owned by Krajina, who has won 4/8 lifetime starts. Bought for 1k.

Worth His Salt, 2020 dark gray colt (ICh. Candidate x GCh. Worth A Diamond). By gold-ranked Candidate out of MSW and millionaire Worth a Diamond, who has produced 2 winners from 3 runners. Most expensive at 13k.

I think due to the gender difference it's OK, Lewis.

Sooo...I may or may not have gone overboard throwing my entire spending limit on one horse.

I've been trying to get my hands on a Foolhardy baby for years, but have been too broke in years past to buy/breed any and too unlucky to claim any of the few who have come up in the claiming races, so when the Foolhardy filly appeared in this auction, I was elated.

Kiss The Fool is a bay weanling out of ICh. French Kiss who won 11 stakes races during her career. Even though French Kiss is rated as a bronze breeder, 3/4 of her raced offspring are winners (the 2YO being the lone unplaced), and Kiss The Fool's full brother, Ch. Postmaster, has won 2 stakes races and placed 2nd and 3rd in 2 others, so I've got high hopes for her. It would be wonderful to finally be able to improve my stock after failing miserably at this game for years. XD

Congrats Faedar on winning the French Kiss filly! I also had my eyes on her, as I own her full brother, but I knew it would be a dog fight and I opted for multiple horses vs. just one. If it makes you feel better in throwing 100k at her, I paid 165k for Postmaster as an untried yearling when he just had one winning half-sib (their other half-sib, MSW Montmarte, was unraced at the time). You got the better deal!

Picked up two more.

Blood On My Name, 2020 blood bay colt (ICh. Blue Smoke x Off You Go, by Ch. Irish River). First foal for SP dam, who is half to Ch. High Intellect. Bought for 1k.

First Snow, 2020 dark gray filly (Monarchos x Checkthebackdoor). Mostly I just wanted a filly to try and offset all the colts I had just purchased. Half to SP Ch. African Blackwood. Her other two raced half-sibs have been mostly FF owned/campaigned and are inactive or went unraced for a whole year so hard to really say how she'll do. Worth a try at 1k.

I was only going to go for about 4 to 6 but ended up with 7 horses! Though I was very determined to have 3 of these horses.

Starlight Wishes
Sea the Stars x Strobe Light. Weanling  filly. Cost $1,000

Fairy Kingdom
Animal Kingdom x Wicked Witch (Whirlaway). Yearling filly.  Cost $1,5000.

Grand Mix Latino Mix x Grand Thunder. Yearling colt. Cost $1,000.

Star Actor Stagehand x Starship Colony (created). Cost $3,000.

Love Hound Harvard Bound x Heartfelt. Yearling filly. Cost $3,000.

Dark Navy Blue Ensign x PromessesBrumeuses. Cost $1,000.

Danzig Mix Latino Mix x Zig-Zag. Cost $1,000.

Danzig Mix was a last minute choice but I choose to have the last non bided foal from the auction. He was the last foal sold in the auction. And I kept on changing the name of my 'Animal Kingdom' filly but I finally decided the name after like 8 name changes in a few days lol.

My favourite name I choose is currently Starlight Wishes, don't know why, but I think the name just randomly suited her lol

I didn't go overboard, and only walked away with one impulse buy.  I guess that's a win.  Came away with 2 of 3 of my initial targets.

I've got two really nice sons of Dixie Time, so a third out of a gold-ranked mare seemed like a good idea.  Days Gone By is a 14.2h bay weanling (Dixie Time x Pushin Buttons).  He's 1/2 to MSW Ch. Charming Scoundrel.  Looks like he wants to be a big guy.  My most expensive purchase, at $30,500.

Since I bought Celtic Star, I've intended to snap up as many of his foals as I can, since the majority are FF-owned and unraced or very lightly raced.  There were two in the sale, but I figured I shouldn't be stingy, lol.  So, I brought home True North.  She's a 15.1h dark bay (Celtic Star x High Point - Point Given).  High Point has a SW to her credit, so there's potential, at least.  Price tag was $21,500.

Lastly, I went back for a filly.  Disco Queen (Dark Demand x Disco Lemonade), a liver chestnut, is going to be a tall girl, already measuring in at 16.2h as a yearling.  Disco Lemonade's other foals haven't done much, but hopefully she'll at least earn back her price tag of $1,000.

Good luck to the stables who purchased the two kiddos we threw into the sale!

I'm just going to do the highlights because I may or may not have gone overboard lol There were just a lot of foals from stallions I don't have offspring from and most of these were bought for only $1k.

On Your Honor ICh. Long Live the King x On Your Mark (Easy Goer). Flashy liver chestnut colt whose dam is half to NCh. Run Jenny Run and she has 4 winners out of 5 racers. Bought for $1k

American Cleopatra American Pharoah x Adorable Runaway. I was really excited to pick up a foal from AP's first crop as I only have 1 mare in foal to him for next year. Dam's foals are mostly unraced but she does have a SP colt by Highland Magic. Bought for $1k

Picked up two weanling colts by Blue Smoke since we now own him, just to make sure they went to active racing homes.
Smoking is out of MSW GCh Kill the King and Disclaimer is out of Plagiarism (S) who has 5 winners out of 5 racers including, MSW by Sunday Silence. Bought for $1k each

Muchos Gracias Mucho Macho Man x Ch. Behind the Mask. Mucho Macho Man only stood for one season so I thought it would be nice to have a foal by him, but ended up being one of my more expensive purchases. Bought for $20k

In Spades ICh. Chivalry x Maid of Spades.  Really like the lines on this colt. Dam has mostly unraced offspring but 2 winners from 2 racers including a SW by Irish River. Another expensive purchase, bought for $24k

Rosesandwine Lasting Spirit x Budding Rose. Dam only has her bronze ranking but she has 9 winners from 13 racers including 1 SW & 2 SP.  Bought for $1k

Shanthi -  Let me know about American Cleopatra's name. It is the name of AP's full sister, but she's not too famous and she's already been retired to brood after only like 3 starts, though she is stakes placed.

There are plenty more but I don't have the time or energy to write about all of them ahah Plus a lot are from unproven lines that I'm taking a chance on.
