Title: Precocity/Late Maturing
Post by: Shirozora on July 06, 2009, 08:28:32 PM
Does FF take into account a stallion/mare's precocity or late-maturing tendencies?

When a foal is bred, the maturity timespan (when they first mature to when they become a has-been) is partly based on their parents.  So, if the sire had a 2 year peak (say, from 2 1/2 to 4 1/2) and mom had an 18 month peak (from 3 to 4 1/2), the baby is likely to have a peak that's around 21 months.  However, random numbers are inserted as well, since genetics aren't all-powerful (and if either sire or dam has a low BPF, the foal's number will be more random).  So baby might end up with a 12 month peak, or a 3 year peak, if the random numbers like/dislike him a lot.

That was a really long-winded version of "yes". ;)

Awesome. Thanks for the long-winded but very insightful answer, Shanthi. I kind of forgot why I asked...*looks at her herd of 2YOs*

They can certainly be all over the map. Take for example FFCh. Foolhardy who didn't burn up the track until he turned 4 yet many of his 2yos are already winning races. Go figure  :P
