Oh that is so frustrating!!!
That happened with my first stallion, too (Witness). I got 1 1/2 seasons with him, but thankfully I also scooped up one of his lightly raced 2YOs along the way and managed to get him to studhood (Bear Witness). Here's hoping you'll have similar luck in that regard!

Happy birthday, Shanthi!

Most of our horses are home at rest (if I don't do them all at once, I tend to do a crap job of getting them home regularly), so we only had one out on this date:

Wins:
Klondike Finale (3yo, Witness) in a NW1 Allowance

Anything Goes / Re: Horse riding again
« on: November 19, 2017, 08:12:01 PM »
I didn't realize you weren't riding out there! I'm so glad to hear you're getting back into the swing of it (hopefully), though. It feels good, doesn't it? At least for the soul, not so much for the out-of-practice muscles.  ;)

I'm hoping to try to get my oldest into it next spring (she'll be 3 1/2 by then). She already told me she's asking Santa for a "real horse and a real giraffe" this Christmas.  8)  We're lucky to have friends who are a few miles away with horses and an "open invitation" to come out and ride. I just hate to feel like we're imposing!

Long Hot Summer (5yo, Gunningdownromance) in an Allowance

General/Questions / Re: Slacker 2yo, 3yo Hopefuls
« on: November 14, 2017, 02:08:02 AM »
Luck!!!  That's the only way to explain it!!
When I started, I couldn't afford fancy bloodlines or compete with the bigger stables, so I took chances on mares who didn't have much proven. Most of my best mares are ones who were unraced/never ran on flat/never raced at the ideal ages of 2/3 (so no idea if they would have been any good).

I currently have the following:
Keria Toon (created), claimed in her first ever race at age 4 - I took a chance without ever knowing if she would have been successful at 2yo/3yo
Sovereign Song (created), bought at age 5 as a multi-winner who had never touched the flat
Twilight Embers (Irish River x created mare), a Color War prize, a broodmare carrying her 3rd foal (so unproven offspring) but a HOTY title
(now retired) Dixie Love (created), bought at age 6 as a one-time winner who never raced at 2yo/3yo (so I hoped she would have been amazing then and would produce winners at 2&3)

I also sold the following before I knew she'd be platinum:

Slew Copy (created), bought at age 5 with just 3 total starts, never ran over flat

General/Questions / Re: Stallion Watch: Prospects
« on: November 11, 2017, 05:57:27 PM »
I went through a bout of inactivity (thanks to working + young kiddos), but am starting to get active again. As a result, I don't have many prospects yet. I'm hoping that in a year's time we'll be in a better position to post here. I sold all the boys who were close as I couldn't give them the attention to boost them into studhood.

However, thanks to Lewis at Starfish Stables, we do have one future stallion prospect who is already qualified.  NCh. Franco Classico was the 2019 3 Year Old Colt and Classic Horse of the Year. He is sired by I'm A Classic out of a created mare, Little Franco. He has won such notable races as the Breeder's Cup Classic and UAE Derby, plus he placed in the Preakness and showed in the Belmont. At this time, he will not be standing in 2022 unless his performance makes a massive decline.

C, san I just say all of them?  Ha.
Truth be told, most of ours are maidens or are still very lightly raced. We also have two stakes winners and two stakes placed already, so it's not all bad!

Glowstick is by Foolhardy out of NCh. Afterglow (x Affirmed). With talent on both sides, I'm hoping she matures into something amazing. Mom didn't flourish until age 4, though, so I'm not surprised she hasn't hit the winner's circle just yet.

Grecian God is by Foolhardy out of HOTY ICh. Twilight Embers, making him 1/2 to our stallion, Fight The Twilight. He has only started once and did come in 2nd, but I'm hoping he hits his stride next year.

Maria Von Trapp is by Von Lichtenstein out of platinum-rated Ch. Keria Toon. 4 out of her 5 older siblings are stakes quality (1 SP, 1 SW, and 2 MSW). She is already a winner, but only 2 wins out of 4 starts.

Sing Of Heroes is by V is for Victory out of platinum-rated Sovereign Song. 4 out of her 5 older siblings are stakes quality (1 SW, 3 MSW), so the potential is there!

Uptown Funk is by Witness out of gold-rated Uptown Girl. She is 1/2 to two MSWs and one SW.

These are definitely the ones I'm eyeballing most for next year!

General/Questions / Re: Breeding matches
« on: November 09, 2017, 01:35:31 AM »
I do a lot of different things, and each year my method seems to evolve.

Originally, I looked up a mare's family line (mostly mare lines) and looked for the most successful racer from that group. Then I tried to find the stallion most related to that stud if the sire wasn't still available. I had a lot of luck with that, and my runners were very diverse in talent - sprinters, hurdlers, long distance, early-bloomers and late-bloomers, etc.

As my stable grew out of control, I decided to specialize more. I started screening my broodmare herd based on abilities that I hoped might someday help me breed a Derby winner, i.e. speed records over flat Derby-like distances, peaking around age 3, etc. I then try to pair them with a stallion who will enhance these and fill in any gaps (example: a mare that peaked age 2-3 to pair with a stallion who bloomed later like age 3-4). Now that I have so many stallions of my own, I've been trying to keep their books fairly full with high quality mares, so I haven't been seeking as many outside boys as in previous years. I still utilize this method, though.

Questions / Re: Racing schedule

This seems to be happening again (not sure yet if it's been posted on the bug site). When you click on "Enter Races", you get an option for November 11, 2021 races (correct) and January 3, 2022 (incorrect and won't let you enter). Just thought I'd give you a heads up!

All mares have been added! I'm so glad to see such interest in my boys.

And Hilda - yes, pictures! It's been forever since I did pictures for my horses. I figured I was overdue!

Can I get a Feb2 spot for Ch. Finesse to Sionnach? She was a stakes winner at 2 & 3, so I'm hopeful it would be a good match.  :)
