How'd You Do? / Re: 10/17

Pretty much an "All-or-Nothing" day. 5 wins (including 3 SW's) but nothing else worth writing about (we did have 5 runners finish 8th in their respective races!!!)

20(12)-5(3)-0-2(2)-2(2) $584,000

Wins:
Away Team Honors (2yo, Away The Lads) in a NW3 Allowance
Ch. Magical Scent (4yo, Foolhardy) in an Allowance
Ch. Night Of Magic (4yo, Nightfight) in the Iroquois Stakes (Ungr.)
GCh. El Dorado (5yo, Eighteen Karat) in the Hudson Stakes (Ungr.) - His 5th SW and, as he already has a G1W, he only needs 2 SW of any grade to qualify for Stud.
Ch. Open Swing (5yo, Witness) in the Meadow Brook Stakes (Gr. 1)

12(1)-5-1-1-1 $164,850

Only 1 Stakes runner and, while she only finished 6th out of 10, she ended with the same SF as the winner. Otherwise, 5 wins out of 12 runners is a great ratio and only 2 out of the money.

Wins:
Major's Silk (3yo, Major's Flight) in an Allowance
Ch. Dance of Fire (4yo, Tottenham Hotspur) in an Allowance
GCh. What a Jewel (5yo, What's Debatable) in an Allowance
Ch. Naval Dawn (3yo, In The Navy) in a NW3 Allowance
Ch. Back to First (3yo, First Born Son) in a NW3 Allowance

Places:
Ch. Admiral Al (4yo, In The Navy) in an Allowance

Shows:
No Street Access (5yo, Street Wise) in an Allowance

Fourths:
Dixie Valentine (2yo, Worth The Wait) in a NW3 Allowance

Fifths:
Torpid (4yo, Tottenham Hotspur) in an Allowance
Ch. High Altitude (3yo, High Chances) in an Allowance

Also Rans:
Cheerful Templar (3yo, In The Navy) 11th in a NW3 Allowance
Valentine's Topaz (2yo, Tottenham Hotspur) 6th in the Karrakatta Plate (Gr. 2)

General/Questions / Re: Continuing Stallion Spotlights?
« on: October 13, 2018, 02:53:55 am »
I would be very interested in writing about new stallions who will be retiring soon or recently retired, so would love to hear from anyone who has a racehorse definitely heading to the shed in 2023.

We have a couple of horses who will probably be heading to the Stallion barns for 2023, both 6YO:-

NCh. Devil's Heir, by ICh. Devil His Due (S) out of GCh. Heiress (G).

NCh. Secret Handshake, by ICh. Highland Magic (G) out of GCh. Secret Signal (P).

In addition, we have been racing Ivy Creek Lease NCh. Franco Classico, 6YO by NCh. I'm A Classic (G) out of Ch. Little Franco (G), and he is already qualified. Alyssa will be the one deciding what is on the agenda for him for next year, although I believe that she has already said he will be retired to stud next year.

We also have two younger horses who are already qualified but will be kept in training next year:-

NCh. Explosive Motif, 5YO by FFCh. Foolhardy (P) out of Ch. Fenix (G), and

GCh. Fool To Be Smokin', 4YO by FFCh. Foolhardy (P) out of WCh. Smokin' (P).

28(12)-7(3)-8(3)-2-3(1) $2,191,200

Finally something to write about after a number of disappointing race days.

Victor's Sands (3yo, Worthy Victor) in an Allowance

GCh. Ablative Armour (4yo, Monarchos) in the The Galaxy (Gr. 1) - Definitely seems to prefer racing in Australia as 8 of his 9 wins have been there. Only needs 1 SW of any grade to become Stud-Qualified.

Famous Races/Horses / Re: Velk√° Pardubick√° (Oct. 14th)

I knew about this race because of the win by Stephen's Society in 1973. He was owned and ridden by Chris Collins, who was a British Amateur Jockey. I was living in England at the time and the British Racing Media made quite a big deal of the fact that the race had been won by a British horse.

Famous Races/Horses / Re: Breeder's Cup Festival (Nov. 2-3)
« on: October 09, 2018, 03:40:25 am »
The BC qualifiers list is currently really buggy. Some horses are getting 3 or more times the points than they should actually have, and the system isn't recognizing any updates. I'm pretty sure Shanthi is aware of the issue but hasn't had time to take care of it yet.

I have plans to run a number of horses but it is difficult to decide who to run in which race because of the questionable lists. It is also difficult to decide whether to Supplement any others for the same reason (I supplemented Fuzzy Square for the Juvenile earlier today but he still isn't showing up on the Qualifiers List - I don't know if it is because of the "buggy" lists or if it is because none of his wins have been over more than 6 furlongs - or both!!!)

Congratulations Cat.

Another great performance by Palermo. Now only needs 1 SP of any grade to be Stud-Qualified.

Have we ever had a horse become Stud-Qualified as a 2YO?

You're right! Thanks for reminding me. In the past it's been a non-issue since the boys were usually much older and had incidental SPs under their belt. It's usually the Gr. 1 win that I'm fighting for at the very end of their careers.

So, bit of a premature celebration.... Whoops!

That should not detract from his achievements. For a horse to be so close to Stud-Qualification after only 9 races is remarkable.

Decent day, but most pleased about the fact that Palermo is now stud-qualified. :-)

I hate to say that I think you might want to double-check that. I believe that to be Stud-Qualified, the horse needs at least 7 SW including 1 G1W & 10 SP including 2 G1P and Palermo only has 8 SP. No matter, it is still a remarkable record and I don't think it will be long before he gets the 2 SP he needs. Congratulations on today's performance.

21(8)-5(2)-5(2)-1-2(1) $885,700

Pretty good day all told with only 4 out of the money. Only 3 colts out today out of our 21 runners and, with one exception, they put up less than impressive performances. Maybe we should leave this game up to the girls!!!

GCh. Bracton (8yo, Rumor Has It) 10th in the Joe Aitcheson (Gr. 1). Officially retired.

Sorry to see him go. He got to 6 SW, etc as a 3YO but I just couldn't get him to get the last SW he needed to become Stud-Qualified. Finally decided to sell him in the hopes that he might have an uptake in form in new surroundings. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and, as he is now 8YO and probably well past his prime, I can understand why he would be retired.

We have another horse in a similar position, NCh. Gaudy Night, who is a year younger but also only needs one more SW. Unlike Bracton, Gaudy Night has shown a little recent form this year, including winning the G1 Grand National for the second time, so we are still hopeful for him.

The highlight of the day was Fuzzy Square (2yo, Foolhardy) in the Skyline Stakes (Gr. 3). He maintained his perfect record, 3 for 3, with 2 SW. At this moment, he is the only 2YO Breeders' Cup contender in our Stable.

Good day, only 2 Off the Board.

Ch. Silk Parachute (4yo, Major's Flight) in an Allowance
Ch. Charlotte's Web (4yo, Strider) in the Coolmore Classic (Gr. 1)

Not great with less than 33% OTB. Did have 4 winners, including 1SW, so shouldn't complain too much. Will only list the winners and seconds as the rest aren't really worth the ink.

BTW - Congratulations to Cat on Ch. Palermo's win today. This 2YO son of our deceased stallion FFCh. Foolhardy is now 7 for 7, including 6 SW, 4 of which were G1W.

Wins:
Ch. Mantle of Honor (4yo, Mantle of Power) in an Allowance
Major Sunset (3yo, Major's Flight) in a NW3 Allowance
Miraculous Flight (3yo, Major's Flight) in a NW1 Allowance
Ch. Classic Rock (4yo, Witness) in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr. 2)

Annual Select Auction / Re: 2022 Annual Select Auction - How'd You Do?
« on: September 04, 2018, 06:36:58 pm »
Won our 5th horse from this Auction, Navy Cross, a 4yo by NCh. In The Navy (S) out of GCh. Splendid Silence (G). He is by one of our resident stallions and his Dam is Gold-Rated. He currently has a 33% win percentage. He cost $1,000.

Now to wait for the "wait-until-Shanthi-increases-the-limits" prospects!!! LOL!
