Well, we're super, super excited about this one.

Forbidden City is a smashing black filly with minimal white by WCh. King David out of NCh. Sacred Hill.  This is Sacred Hill's first foal.  She will be sent to Crystal Rainbow for her 2nd foal.

Whoo!  Second foal of the season came today.  The name's still being debated, but:

Initforthelonghaul
ICh. Ring of Fire x GCh. Go for Glory
9.2hh Black filly

Go for Glory has been bred to High Chances.

I'd suggest continuing the debate on the name.  ;)  Wherethere'ssmoke is 7 years older, and has dibs.

Cute baby, though!  :)

Try and get yourself a blue roan mare...or you could breed to Blue Ensign, who is currently the only blue roan stud in the game.   I'm hoping, though, to get this colt studified...so, if you don't mind waiting five or six years...  ;D

Holy foals, batman!  More colts!

Yes, I'm as shocked as our barn manager, since fillies have usually been the rule around here.  Last night yielded us with two more colts.

Timbuktu
ICh. Dark Continent x Ch. Notanotherhighland
9.0h Black Colt

Notanotherhighland will be visiting What's Your Point

Necromancer
ICh. Magic Glory x Shattered Dreams
9.1h Bay Colt

Shattered Dreams is headed to Illinois to visit Lasting Spirit.

2 fillies, 3 colts, 20 to go (next due in Feb)

Chance of Rain
FFCh. High Chances x Singinintherain
9.1hh Brown Filly

Singinintherain has been sent to FF for a date with Irish River.

This one was foaled prematurely.  Not sure how prematurely, though.  I think only a couple days, given her size.

Definitely psyched to have another HC filly on the ground.  =)

3 fillies, 3 colts, 20 to go

Still waiting on Out of Tune's foal.  She lost her first foal by Bold Ruler, and I'm just really nervous about some bad luck that's gonna befall her second time around.

Scout
ICh. Gunningdownromance x Ch. Fantasies o'War (G)
7.0hh Chestnut Colt

He came 15 days in advance of his expected foaling date (3/1).  Guess he wanted to scout out the area first.   ;)

Ah well, we're happy to have him.  Fantasies o'War will be headed to National Post, since Crystal Rainbow got filled up pretty fast.  =)

4 fillies, 4 colts, 18 to go

Well, speak of the Devil...Out of Tune foaled early this morning and presented us with a healthy baby girl!

Reprise
FFCh. High Chances x Ch. Out of Tune (out of Faith Hill (P))
9.1hh Black Filly

Out of Tune was bred to Dark Continent for another Feb. baby.  Here's hoping that this one's healthy, too!

5 fillies, 4 colts, 17 foals still to go

Ask Directions
ICh. Dark Continent x Ask DNA by Cross Roads
8.2hh Black Filly

First crop for both dam and sire.  Should be interesting to watch.

Ask DNA will be bred to Irish River.

Colts have caught up!  Two today.

Not sure about either of the names, so any suggestions would be helpful.  The only restriction is that Lone Star's foal's name needs to start with "Lonely"  (e.g. 1/2 sibs are: Lonely River, Lonely Planet, Lonely Fool)

Lonely Victor
ICh. Dark Continent x Ch. Lone Star by Lonesome Glory
8.3hh Dark Bay Colt
1/2 to SW Ch. Lonely River.

Take It In Stride
WCh. Strider x GCh. Hollywood Native by Alydar
9.1hh Strawberry Roan colt

Next foal isn't due until the very end of March.

6 fillies, 6 colts, 14 to go

I like them both just fine. I've been using walking or movement words for some Strider foals, the Hollywood in his pedigree made me think of Walker Texas Ranger lol, I think that goes over the character limit on names tho and I pulled that out of nowhere tho, the name he has now is great too.

Strider has been having a lot of colts in his first crop: only 5 fillies out of 14 born so far-hope the girls catch up when the other 1/2 of the crop is born!

I like both names! :)  Lonely Victor has a nice ring to it.  I might opt for Takin' It In Stride instead of Take It In Stride (or maybe Take Things In Stride?  might be too long).  Anyway, both names are cool, I think. :)

Well, she's finally popped today.  Original date was 4/1

(Un)Conditional Love
WCh. I'm Your Angel x NCh. Unconditional by Cigar
8.1hh Dark Bay Colt
First foal of dam.

Unconditional will be sent to Magic Glory.

Sadly, Unconditionally Yours doesn't quite fit.  Going back and forth between Unconditional Love and Conditional Love.  You know, I'll only love you if you buy me that ice cream cone, mom. ;-)

It's been a busy couple of days.

Dark Seduction
ICh. Dark Continent x Romance Me (G)
8.2hh Chestnut Colt, foaled May 4th

Black Cherry
FFCh. High Chances x Cherry Flavored
8.2hh Black Colt, foaled May 5th

17 foals, 6 fillies, 11 colts

Woah... The colts have it this year.  We've never had more colts than fillies, and this year it's 2:1 colts, almost!

Well, we had our first stillborn of the season, which all things considered makes us very lucky.  We lost a cute little filly by ICh. Dark Continent out of Cryptorose.  Cryptorose has been bred to High Chances.  She will be bred back to DC next year.

Breakthrough
FFCh. High Chances x Liquid Gold (G)
8.3hh Bay filly

Liquid Gold has been bred to Dark Continent.

We've been pretty lucky, as this is the first time we've ever lost a broodie (either to retirement or death), and we usually lose only 1 foal per season, so it was bound to happen to us one time or another.  We're sorry we lost her, but we're lucky it was her instead of some of our more distinguished mares.

Last foal of the season.

Gimme A Sign
NCh. Gimme A Shot x Symbolic (S)
8.2hh Black Colt

Symbolic has been bred to Dark Continent for a '14 foal.

Foaling season here at the Hill is DONE!

Stats: 25 foals, 1 stillborn, 1 deceased mare

Of the 25 foals: 10 fillies, 15 colts

For the first time *EVER* in CH breeding history (all six years), the colts have it.  =)  Hopefully this will make them easier to part with...

And today brings us to the close of the 2013 breeding season.  I'm very, very happy to say that all of our mares due in early January (and one scheduled for today!) have managed to keep their legs crossed long enough to get us into the 2014 season.  You go, girls!

Best wishes to everyone for a safe and healthy 2014 foaling season.

Yay!  It's always a celebration when those pesky January mares manage to actually make it through without foaling until January.  You just made me check my weanling count and no December foals for CS either!  :)
